Density-clustering of continuous gravitational wave candidates from large surveys

    Get PDF
Searches for continuous gravitational waves target nearly monochromaticgravitational wave emission from e.g. non-axysmmetric fast-spinning neutronstars. Broad surveys often require to explicitly search for a very large numberof different waveforms, easily exceeding ∼1017\sim10^{17} templates. In suchcases, for practical reasons, only the top, say ∼1010\sim10^{10}, results aresaved and followed-up through a hierarchy of stages. Most of these candidatesare not completely independent of neighbouring ones, but arise due to somecommon cause: a fluctuation, a signal or a disturbance. By judiciouslyclustering together candidates stemming from the same root cause, thesubsequent follow-ups become more effective. A number of clustering algorithmshave been employed in past searches based on iteratively finding symmetric andcompact over-densities around candidates with high detection statistic values. The new clustering method presented in this paper is a significant improvementover previous methods: it is agnostic about the shape of the over-densities, isvery efficient and it is effective: at a very high detection efficiency, it hasa noise rejection of 99.99%99.99\% , is capable of clustering two orders ofmagnitude more candidates than attainable before and, at fixed sensitivity itenables more than a factor of 30 faster follow-ups. We also demonstrate how tooptimally choose the clustering parameters.<br

The aim of this work is to develop a UV exciter based on an exclamp for the luminescence method of capillary control. In the process of research, the effective development of a UV irradiator based on an exclamp for luminescent capillary monitoring in order to achieve the optimum parameters of the corresponding task in conducting luminescence method of capillary control: - change in the wavelength, under the selection of a specific gas mixture and the conditions in which an electric discharge is realized; - increase in the resource of work; - Portability, because the excilamp has a small weight, it is possible to upgrade it to a portable version powered by a battery

The paper consists of the detailed model description, the testing which allows to estimate the model adequacy, and the results of the brightness amplifier simulation for different operating modes. As a results of simulation, the effect of pumping circuit parameters on brightness amplifier characteristics was estimated and the spatio-temporal brightness amplifier active medium gain structure was studied

Magnetoresistance of a two-dimensional electron gas with spatially periodic lateral modulations: Exact consequences of Boltzmann's equation

On the basis of Boltzmann's equation, and including anisotropic scattering in the collision operator, we investigate the effect of one-dimensional superlattices on two-dimensional electron systems. In addition to superlattices defined by static electric and magnetic fields, we consider mobility superlattices describing a spatially modulated density of scattering centers. We prove that magnetic and electric superlattices in xx-direction affect only the resistivity component ρxx\rho_{xx} if the mobility is homogeneous, whereas a mobility lattice in xx-direction in the absence of electric and magnetic modulations affects only ρyy\rho_{yy}. Solving Boltzmann's equation numerically, we calculate the positive magnetoresistance in weak magnetic fields and the Weiss oscillations in stronger fields within a unified approach.Comment: submitted to PR

Weak Localization and Integer Quantum Hall Effect in a Periodic Potential

We consider magnetotransport in a disordered two-dimensional electron gas in the presence of a periodic modulation in one direction. Existing quasiclassical and quantum approaches to this problem account for Weiss oscillations in the resistivity tensor at moderate magnetic fields, as well as a strong modulation-induced modification of the Shubnikov-de Haas oscillations at higher magnetic fields. They do not account, however, for the operation at even higher magnetic fields of the integer quantum Hall effect, for which quantum interference processes are responsible. We then introduce a field-theory approach, based on a nonlinear sigma model, which encompasses naturally both the quasiclassical and quantum-mechanical approaches, as well as providing a consistent means of extending them to include quantum interference corrections. A perturbative renormalization-group analysis of the field theory shows how weak localization corrections to the conductivity tensor may be described by a modification of the usual one-parameter scaling, such as to accommodate the anisotropy of the bare conductivity tensor. We also show how the two-parameter scaling, conjectured as a model for the quantum Hall effect in unmodulated systems, may be generalized similarly for the modulated system. Within this model we illustrate the operation of the quantum Hall effect in modulated systems for parameters that are realistic for current experiments.Comment: 15 pages, 4 figures, ReVTeX; revised version with condensed introduction; two figures taken out; reference adde

The gender perspective in climate change and global health

    Get PDF
Background: Population health is a primary goal of sustainable development. United Nations international conferences like the Beijing Platform for Action have highlighted the key role of women in ensuring sustainable development. In the context of climate change, women are affected the most while they display knowledge and skills to orient themselves toward climate adaptation activities within their societies. Objective: To investigate how the gender perspective is addressed as an issue in research and policy-making concerning climate change and global health. Methods: A broad literature search was undertaken using the databases Pubmed and Web of Science to explore the terms ‘climate change,’ ‘health,’ ‘gender,’ and ‘policy.’ Climate change and health-related policy documents of the World Health Organization (WHO) and National Communications and National Adaptation Programs of Action reports submitted to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change of selected countries were studied. Assessment guidelines to review these reports were developed from this study's viewpoint. Results: The database search results showed almost no articles when the four terms were searched together. The WHO documents lacked a gender perspective in their approach and future recommendations on climate policies. The reviewed UN reports were also neutral to gender perspective except one of the studied documents. Conclusion: Despite recognizing the differential effects of climate change on health of women and men as a consequence of complex social contexts and adaptive capacities, the study finds gender to be an underrepresented or non-existing variable both in research and studied policy documents in the field of climate change and health
